Italy Redux: ”Worth Seeing More Than Once…”

What is it about some books, movies, places… that compel us to return, to repeat, to revisit? What makes them “worth seeing more than once”?

Drawn back...why?
Why do we yearn to return to some places?

Why do we return to some places? What pulls us back? What tugs at our heart strings, almost eliciting a sense of longing…homesickness?

A wish to recapture something? An emotion evoked? A memory? Maybe even a sense of “knowing”, familiarity or connection on some inexplicable level…

Perhaps something resonates, touches a cord, invites us to return, to linger a little longer?

There doesn’t really need to be “a reason”, does there? Perhaps just trying to put it into words dilutes the magic and mystery of its allure?

Of course, it’s always appealing to see new places – I do love the challenge of exploring and experiencing someplace new. But, then, of course, familiarity is comforting, reassuring, relaxing…

For myself…reviewing photos, experiences undoubtedly recalls memories and with those memories, not only are emotions evoked and rekindled but stories of the places and people that shared that time with me.

That inexplicable desire that draws us back..once more ...to linger & to savor...
That inexplicable desire that draws us back..once more…to linger & to savor…

Of course,  no experience can truly be repeated, can it? The first time is always “the first time”…like first love but …there are always new layers,  subtleties, details. And places change, we change and that blending of the familiar and, yet, a freshness, a “newness” brings a new richness and depth to our experience and to our memories.

In a few days, I’ll be returning to Italy…to familiar places; Sicily, Venice, and Florence. Places where I have a history of memories and, in some cases, deep roots. As I revisit some familiar and some new, I always leave myself open to what this visit will reveal.

Do we really need a “reason” to want to return?

This trip will take me back Sicily as a tour leader with my local destination expert and guests. Then I’ll connect with a friend/associate in Venice and Florence, reconnecting with lovely local friends and exploring new possibilities.  I’m looking forward to it and I do hope that you will join me? After all, half the fun is sharing with you!

What is “worth seeing more than once” for you? Places, books, movies, music? Please share…

  1. You said it well, Victoria, and sometimes we don’t need a reason. I couldn’t agree more about the urge to always return to certain places in Italy. Have a wonderful trip. I can’t wait to follow your posts and photos!

  2. I think every reason you listed is exactly why Victoria. Try as I might to visit a new place on each of my vacations, sometimes, it is just that familiarity of a tried and true location that I have to have. Like putting on an old worn out sweater that just makes you go, ‘Ahhhh……’ That feeling when you take that 1st step on familiar ground and your entire being feels as though it settles in. It’s a feeling that I find hard to explain in words, but one that I feel in a few different places. Have a wonderful time!! I will be following along to be sure.
