I ♥LOVE ♥ Learning with Locals: Meet Marina Calamai! “Inspired Creations from Cupcakes to Cupolas!”

How We “Met”…
Florence, at least the historical centro and surrounding neighborhoods (including where I live on the Oltrarno), is definitely an invitation to walk, wander, explore…and linger. Easily navigated (mostly flat) once you get used to the uneven pavement and sidewalks, always offers new delights and discoveries.

You are invited to s-l-o-w down, pause, even get a little lost and you will be rewarded with treasures tucked away in narrow alleyways and vicoli – a local cafe you walked by so many times but now there’s a table outside, a bottega or boutique that may have had its shutters closed before…

This is exactly how I first noticed Marina’s charming atelier! It’s actually located on the popular Via Santo Spirito – lined with bars, antique shops, artisan workshops but somehow I never seemed to pass by when it was open.

Spotlight…
That all changed last November when, I needed to “research” to learn more about Marina for a “Member Spotlight” interview/article for a wonderful organization here, WIN. It offered the perfect opportunity to visit her atelier and spend more time learning about her background, inspiration and creative pieces…

At last, I get to meet Marina!

Although Marina was “technically” born in Arezzo, there is no question that she is definitely Fiorentina! Self-described as “inspired by nature”, Marina is an extremely versatile and multi-talented artist and designer. Her curiosity and fascination are multi-faceted and she is always exploring ways to “stimulate all of the senses” through her art.

Inspired Creativity!
Marina’s interests and collections are so eclectic! Literally from cupcakes (yes, there’s a story and a ring!) to other very whimsical and playful themes such as a collection dedicated to her favorite libations (hint: bubbles and martinis!), and to her ecological, socially responsible themes and, of course, the influence of Florence and (of course!) all things Tuscan her virtuosity and talent is obvious!

Marina’ s collections reflect her passion for transforming metal into stories with layers of meaning. In other words, there’s always more than meets the eye. Her collections include necklaces, charms, rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, cuff links…and even home wares…and every collection has a story originating from her personal passions and interests.

Eclectic and whimsical!

Truly an alchemist, her designs are intentionally evocative, whimsical and invitations to explore and find more (e.g. labyrinths) as well as examine timely social issues.

Jewelry making for over 20 years using the lost wax technique, she chose to work primarily with bronze, because of its feel and luster, as well as silver and gold. Marina exhibited her “Olfactory Santo Spirito Bell Tower Pendant” and “Corona Venus 18K Gold Ring” last October during Milan Jewelry Week.

However, her creative talents reach far beyond “just” making jewelry! Painting, furniture design, and nature-based installations/performances are also avenues for her artistic expression. It is, of course, no surprise that she is commissioned to create unique pieces.

Her Collection of home wares includes fabulous fruit-themed accessories!

Since 2001, she has exhibited and performed in museums as well as private and public spaces and collaborated with well-known brands (e.g., Cantine Antinori, Andrea Bocelli Foundation and Fornaciai Art Gallery) creating unique designs and collaborative pieces.

The Tuscany Collection

Her recent Limited Edition piece, ”The Labyrinth of Love”, is a tribute/ode to Mother Nature and is inspired by Marina’s recent installation located in the historic gardens at Villa Favard di Rovezzano. (And I have to confess that, as difficult as it is to choose a favorite, for me it’s the Labyrinth of Love pendant.)

How to choose a favorite…but I had to choose LOVE!

The Eco-Art-System Association and its volunteers along with Marina, planted over 380 laurel plants. An interactive game “Eco-Oca”, located within the labyrinth, raises awareness about the environment and climate change. The goal is to raise awareness of our connection to the environment and to encourage reflection and “an introspective journey”.

The installation was donated to the City of Florence and is under the European Committee of the Regions Patronage. (You’re invited to visit the public garden daily from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.)

When you come to Florence, you are invited to visit Marina Calamai’s charming atelier on Via Santo Spirito, where her unique pieces are crafted and on display.
