Staycations – Home Sweet Home

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”

– Henry Miller

Taking a vacation doesn’t have to mean traveling far from home! When rising fuel costs, the fluctuating dollar, and other time/money constraints crimp your vacation budget, a staycation may be just the ticket!

Odds are you haven’t had or taken the time to explore your own backyard! Why not make your own or a nearby town, community, or recreational area your vacation destination?  Make it an adventure by being a “tourist”!

Are there historical sites, museums, ethnic neighborhoods, local events (e.g., concerts, festivals, workshops) and restaurants you’ve always wanted to check out? Maybe there’s a cute little B & B, a relaxing spa or a great campground near the beach where you could stay (so you’re not tempted to do chores or laundry!)?

Enjoying your hometown and nearby sights can be fun and easy on the wallet!

Go to your chamber of commerce or local tourist information website. Check out your localnewspapers for upcoming special events to enjoy (or to avoid!) Take the train, ride bikes, take local excursions. Do something you’ve always wanted to do, even if it’s just for a day. Split your vacation between you-time and family time. Send the kids to camp and take off for a few days. Or leave the kids with their grandparents and you go on retreat!

Be creative and adventurous! Enjoy being a visitor in your own backyard!
